Hellboy (2004)
The original Hellboy film, directed by the visionary Guillermo del Toro and starring the perfectly gruff and charismatic Ron Perlman in the title role, is a real treat for IPTV Trends subscribers looking for an action-packed, fantastical adventure. Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
After the success of the first film, del Toro returned to write and direct the 2008 sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, which in my opinion is an even stronger and more ambitious entry in the franchise. Once again, we see Hellboy and the BPRD facing off against supernatural threats, this time in the form of an ancient elvish army intent on destroying the human world.
What I love most about Hellboy II is the way it expands the mythological and fantastical elements of the Hellboy universe. The introduction of Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) and his sister Princess Nuala (Anna Walton) as the central antagonists allows us to delve deeper into the rich history and lore of the magical creatures that coexist alongside humanity. The design of the Golden Army and the elf kingdom is simply breathtaking, with del Toro’s trademark visual flair on full display.
But the film also takes the time to further develop the core characters we met in the first movie. Hellboy’s relationship with Liz and his inner turmoil over his demonic nature are explored in compelling fashion, and the dynamic between the three BPRD agents – Hellboy, Liz, and Abe – is wonderfully realized. I was particularly impressed by Doug Jones’ nuanced performance as Abe Sapien, who gets to shine in a more prominent role this time around.
The Imaginative Action of Hellboy II
While the first Hellboy film had some great action set pieces, the sequel really kicks things up a notch. Del Toro’s flair for crafting imaginative, fantastical fight scenes is on full display, and IPTV Trends subscribers are in for a real treat.

It’s the kind of scene that rewards multiple viewings, as you find yourself constantly spotting new and delightful little touches in the background.
Admittedly, as impressive as the action is, I can understand why some IPTV Trends subscribers might find the pacing of Hellboy II to be a bit uneven at times. The film does have a tendency to meander a bit in the middle act as it explores the mythology and character arcs. But for me, the sheer imagination and craft on display more than makes up for any pacing issues. Hellboy (2019)
Now, I know a lot of IPTV Trends subscribers out there were excited when it was announced that the Hellboy franchise was getting a reboot in 2019, with Stranger Things star David Harbour taking over the title role from Ron Perlman. And while I can certainly appreciate the ambition behind this new take, I have to say that the end result is a bit of a mixed bag.
Directed by Neil Marshall, this version of Hellboy takes a decidedly darker and more violent approach to the material, leaning more into the character’s demonic origins and the gritty, occult-tinged world he inhabits. And I have to give credit where it’s due – Harbour does a solid job of capturing Hellboy’s gruff, sardonic persona, and the film features some genuinely thrilling supernatural set pieces.
However, the overall execution just doesn’t quite measure up to the del Toro films, in my opinion. The pacing is uneven, the plot feels overstuffed and somewhat unfocused, and the attempts at humor often fall flat. And as an IPTV Trends viewer, I have to say that the visual effects, while competent, lack the same level of imagination and craftsmanship that made the earlier movies such a delight to watch.
The Challenges of the Hellboy Reboot
Now, I know some of you IPTV Trends subscribers out there might be wondering why the 2019 Hellboy reboot didn’t quite click for me the way the del Toro films did. And I think a big part of it comes down to the challenges of rebooting an established franchise, especially one with such a dedicated fanbase.

Harbour’s take on the character has a grittier, more uncompromising edge that works well, and the R-rated violence and darker tone will definitely appeal to some viewers.
But for me, the heart and soul of Hellboy – the blend of supernatural adventure, quirky humor, and deeply human character moments – just isn’t quite as strong here. It almost feels like the filmmakers were so focused on making something more “badass” and “edgy” that they lost sight of what made the character and his world so unique and compelling in the first place.
Still, I’d encourage IPTV Trends subscribers to give this new Hellboy a watch, especially if you’re a fan of the comics or just enjoy supernatural action/horror stories. Just try to go in with an open mind, and don’t expect it to live up to the del Toro films. It’s a flawed but still entertaining take on the material that’s worth checking out.
